Would you believe that automating gates and garage doors has been in our family since 1979?

My name is Gary Baker from Gate-Fix and this is our journey so far…

Ken Baker, my Dad, was one of the pioneers of electronic gates in Natal back in the day when opening your gates with a hand-held remote was something most people couldn’t even comprehend.

Starting out with an idea and his own unique design which he patented, he designed and manufactured everything from the gate operators to the pc boards. Working from his garage at home, Ken carefully and passionately refined and perfected his Gate-Mate automatic gate system and launched it on the Rand Easter Show in Johannesburg in 1981.

I remember as a six-year-old kid, that my Dad’s stand at the NBS House & Garden Show in Durban was a huge hit, with people stopping and staring in amazement at my Dad’s gates magically opening and closing by themselves. My sister Belinda and I were proud to be a part of something so new and exciting.

He soon had a full order book which led him to acquire a mini factory and start his own production line under the name of Kentrols (Pty) Ltd, which ran successfully for many years. It’s hard to believe that my Uncle Brian still has a pair of Gate-Mate motors opening and closing his driveway gates some thirty-eight years later – all be it with some TLC.

Some years later with Centurion Systems emerging as leaders in the gate automation industry in South Africa, my Dad stopped the Gate-Mate production line and started installing the new Centurion gate operator concept which began a long-term association with Centurion Systems in Durban.

From a very young age tinkering around in my Dad’s garage at home, then helping with little tasks on his production line at his factory, and finally assisting him on installations during school holidays, it was no surprise that I later joined him at Automatic Gate & Door Services after leaving school.

Ken later accepted a position at a company in a different industry altogether where he would enjoy putting his design and development skills to the test for many years until his retirement.

I subsequently ventured out on my own and registered and started trading as Gate-Fix some fifteen years ago, installing and repairing all makes of automatic gates, garage doors and intercom systems. Many of Ken’s original customers are today still serviced by Gate-Fix.

Over the years at Gate-Fix we have worked diligently and passionately to offer something that is very rare now a days ….. GOOD, HONEST AND RELIABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Throw in QUALITY WORKMANSHIP and we now have a winning formula which has seen us grow from strength to strength.

Starting Gate-Fix as a one-man business, we now have a few teams of well-trained staff in our impressively kitted out Gate-Fix vans – stocking all makes of gate, garage door, intercom, cctv and access control spares, and all the necessary tools and equipment needed to promptly get your system automated or in reliable working order.

We have enjoyed a solid relationship with Centurion Systems for many years and are proud to be one of their preferred service providers.
